Bringing Green Chemical Production Forward in Central Europe

Bringing Green Chemical Production Forward in Central Europe

The chemical industry in central Europe struggles with excessive waste, high greenhouse gas emissions, and a strong reliance on petroleum-based materials. The GreenChemForCE, founded by Interreg Central Europe, will contribute to the revitalization of the local chemical industry, transforming the current linear economic streams into the closed-loop circular systems, and establishing conditions for the return of chemical production back to Europe thanks to the developed green and cost-effective processes.

In the framework of the project GreenChemForCE we will focus on:

  • Sustainable management of plastics
  • Carbon dioxide management in industry: emission reduction and utilization
  • Streamlining processes for the production of fine chemicals

Under the leadership of the Charles University from Prague, partners from Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia, together with associated partners, aim to unify the industrial and academic sectors to achieve greener chemical production in Central Europe by developing strategies and solutions for more sustainable processes and resource management, which will result in reduced pollution and minimized environmental damage in the region and to encourage the regional chemical companies to adopt circularity principles in production and to help a better reception of the chemical industry by the general public. By raising public awareness of the green chemistry principles and training a new generation of experts, the project aims to improve the perception of the regional chemical industry by the general public and the adoption of sustainable practices by the future employees of regional companies. This may eventually lead to the desired behavioural change in both industry and end consumers. The project will also facilitate stronger connections between the partners, leading to long term collaboration between universities, chemical companies and other organizations.

The consortium which connects academic and industrial partners, already met at the kick-off event in Prague on 16th of May, at the Charles University where we looked through planned project activities, presented the roles of individual partners and started working on joint strategy.
